How Roman names worked

A Roman citizen man usually had three names, the tria nomina:

So Gaius Iulius Caesar was Gaius, of the Iulian family, of the Caesar branch, and Marcus Tullius Cicero was Marcus of the Tullian family, nicknamed Cicero, "chickpea".

Roman women usually carried the feminine form of the family name: a daughter of the Cornelii was Cornelia, a daughter of Cicero was Tullia. Sisters were told apart with words like Maior (the elder) and Minor (the younger), or with numbers. Our generator gives women the family name with a cognomen, a form that became common in later centuries.

The names this tool gives are invented in the Roman style, not real historical people. What you type stays in your own browser.
